Fredric Sims

musician | poet

I see now this is how God made me. A musician and a poet.

I grew up in Independence, Missouri. There, my passion for Music and Poetry began. I started in the choir in preschool and started playing my first instrument in 7th grade. The Saxophone. My passion for music went to a whole new level when my dad took me to a local jazz masterclass hosted by saxophonist Kirk Whalum. It was there that the saxophone and jazz began to fascinate me.

My poetry journey began in middle school for two reasons: to communicate about my life and my crushes at the time. Even though I didn't write often, throughout high school and college I was secretly writing poems in my head. I was studying music at UMKC and didn’t know if I could do both. Then I heard a Spoken Word piece by Jessie Lian called “Founded." I said to myself: “I have to do this.” I began competing in local slams and became a two-time “Pound Slam” winner. I also competed twice in the P4CM Poetry Slam at Legacy Conference.

In 2008 my life totally changed when I became a follower of Jesus. I began playing piano and leading worship at my local college ministry. The piano and voice would become my main instruments. I still lead worship at my local church and youth camps.

I see now this is how God made me. A Musician and a Poet.
